This style of gaff is popular with commercial rod and line anglers who find it a very effect way of single handily landing cod, pollack and the like. To avoid damaging the flesh a skilful swipe of the gaff allows you to gill the fish aboard. Pleasure anglers also find a gaff to be a handy and effective way of landing large fish and neatly chin gaffing or winging a specimen can get it on board whilst causing minimal damage to the fish.

It can also be a handy tool for shore anglers as many a specimen has been lost in those last few inches between sea and land.
